These are the first regular circulating coins of the Republic of Armenia, introduced shortly after its separation from the USSR and the introduction of the national currency, the dram, in 1993. The coins were widely used, particularly in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but due to inflation and design changes, the smallest lumas and low drams are now very rare, despite being legal tender. The obverse of all coins in the first series depicts the coat of arms of the Republic of Armenia—a shield with an ornament. The reverse of the coins displays their denomination and year of issue, surrounded by a stylized foliate wreath.
