Both coins were issued in 1967 following a currency reform. Later, in 1971, the monetary system was changed again, so these coins are no longer used as legal tender. However, they are highly prized by collectors. The 10 sengi coin depicts a leopard lying on a branch—one of the country's main symbols, often found in Congo's national emblems. The 1 Congolese franc coin is adorned with the country's coat of arms: a leopard's head, a crossed spear, and an elephant tusk, as well as a ribbon bearing the motto "Justice – Paix – Travail" ("Justice – Peace – Work").
