These are older coins, no longer used in everyday transactions due to high inflation, but they are of interest as collector's items. The obverse of the coins features a portrait of Charlemagne Péralta, a Haitian military leader and one of the founders of the rebel movement against the American occupation of Haiti. The reverse of the coins features the national emblem: a pyramid of cannons and flags, surrounded by various weapons and military paraphernalia symbolizing the struggle for independence. At the top of the pyramid stands a flaming liberty cap, and at the bottom is a ribbon bearing the motto "L'Union Fait La Force" ("Strength in Unity").
