Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninov (1873\u20131943) is a pianist and composer who has become a symbol of Russian music throughout the world.<\/p>\n
He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory as a pianist and composer, having received the Big Gold Medal for his thesis work – the one-act opera Aleko. Tchaikovsky, who took the exam from the young composer, gave the opera a mark of “five plus three” and recommended it for staging at the Bolshoi Theatre.<\/p>\n
In the last years of his life, Rachmaninoff created Symphonic Dances, which music scholars consider one of his best works.<\/p>\n
