With a spherical body, large head and mouth filled with sharp teeth, deep-sea anglerfish are bizarre creatures that live at depths of up to 300 meters in all the world’s oceans. It is surprising how much larger the female, whose body length ranges from 6 centimeters to 1.2 meters, is than the male, who is usually only a few centimeters long.<\/p>\n
To catch prey, female deep-sea anglerfish are equipped with a \u201cfishing rod\u201d and a \u201cbait\u201d attached to it, which is usually equipped with a luminescent organ. The internal structure is complex and includes a bewildering variety of vesicles filled with luminescent bacteria. In addition to the luminous organ, all species possess a light-emitting antennae on the hyoid bone. However, the light of the longhorned beetle does not come from light-producing bacteria, but from photogenic granules lying between the cells. The independent development of two different light-producing mechanisms in this genus is unique in the natural world.<\/p>\n
