The Hanseatic League’s trading network covered more than 200 European cities, from small, charming provincial towns to proud metropolises that still play an important role in modern international trade. Like the guilds of the day, the purpose of the Hanseatic League was to form an alliance between representatives of the same economic activity: in this case, German merchants who traded around the Baltic Sea and neighboring regions of Northern Europe. In this way, they could better protect their commercial interests, provide greater resistance to greedy princes, and adequately protect themselves from piracy and other misfortunes. Unity creates strength, and this was clear back in the Middle Ages.
\nThe obverse features a creative composition of visual elements that give the impression of what was transported and traded along the Hanseatic routes: leather and animal skins, hops, beer and wine, salt and spices, fish, grain and beeswax, wood and cloth. On the map depicting the Hanseatic region, a ship is sailing. A 13th century coin from Bruges symbolizes trade and merit. The symbol of the Bruges bell tower highlights the importance of the Belgian Hanseatic cities and the prosperity they brought.
