Carnival week in Malta is a period of joy and fun. Although the main celebrations take place in the capital Valletta, other towns and villages have their own typical celebrations. The Malta Carnival is an important cultural event. The carnival originates in the city of Birgu. Knights started parades and tournaments here to show off their skills and have fun. Centuries later, the carnival has become a real tradition. Carnival celebrations in the Maltese Islands date back to the 15th century.
