Basilisks, commonly called dragons of Trsat in Rijeka’s folk traditions, are mythical creatures with the characteristics of a snake, a dragon and a rooster. They are considered the guardians of the Trsat fortress above Rijeka. Their creation was entrusted to the famous Viennese sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn, whose work left an indelible mark on Croatian sculpture in the 19th century.
\nThis unique coin has a deep historical and cultural background, inspired by the dragons of Trsat, bronze sculptures created in the first half of the 19th century, commissioned by the Austrian field marshal Count Laval Nugent.<\/p>\n
