To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, Monnaie de Paris released a collection dedicated to the soldiers of the four main allied countries. This collection celebrates the four fates of French commandos, British airborne troops, and American and Canadian infantrymen. The Normandy landings were an amphibious operation carried out on June 6, 1944 in Normandy during World War II by the United States, Great Britain, Canada and their allies against the occupying forces of Germany.
\nThe set includes 4 coins: French troops and Sword Beach, Canadian troops and Juno Beach, British troops and Pegasus Bridge, US troops and Omaha Beach. The reverse of these coins depicts a spiral of all the allied countries that took part in the landings by land, sea or air. The stars under the flags are also a tribute to the Freedom Road, milestones marking the route taken by the American 3rd Army to liberate France.<\/p>\n
