State visits have always been important for Finland when it comes to diplomatic relations between states and the implementation of foreign policy. Hundreds of years ago, state visits took the form of marriages between royal families, which could lead to military alliances and political decision-making. After World War I, when many new nation states emerged in Europe, state visits required a new look. Nevertheless, many traditions such as gala receptions, joint public appearances, dinners and cultural events have survived. For a long time, the most important state visits were to Moscow and Washington, but with Finland’s accession to the EU, the major economic powers of Central and Eastern Europe have taken a more important position. Finnish presidents have excellent opportunities to present the country’s foreign policy while opening doors to export industries and cultural cooperation. Through these statements and speeches, the Finnish presidents, each in their own way, represent the values, principles and goals of Finland and its culture.
