Since 1945, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has listed the sites as “World Heritage”. The purpose of this program is to classify, name and preserve cultural or natural sites of importance to the common heritage of humanity. The program was established by the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage adopted by the UNESCO General Conference on November 16, 1972. In 2019, 1,073 sites in 167 countries were listed.
\nThe Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris is a Gothic cathedral in the heart of the French capital, on the Isle of Cit\u00e9. Built in the 11th century, its stained glass windows, gargoyles and buttresses have inspired many literary works, including a Victor Hugo novel. In April 2019, a massive fire destroyed much of its structure, including the steeple and roof. Restoration work then quickly began in order to restore the monument to its original form.<\/p>\n
