The Bank of Latvia presents a new silver coin, “Bridal Crown,” decorated with crystals. In Latvian tradition, a wedding crown was more than just an ornament, but an important symbol of the bride’s transition to a new family and a new status in life. It emphasized the solemnity of the ceremony and often served as an indicator of the family’s wealth, as not everyone could afford such a luxurious adornment. Therefore, bridal crowns were often passed down through generations or borrowed for the ceremony. <\/p>\n
In the 19th century, richly decorated crowns with glitter and colorful beads were especially prized in Southern Courland. As they moved, they shimmered and sparkled, creating a truly festive and majestic image of the bride. <\/p>\n
The obverse of the coin depicts a luxurious bridal crown, adorned with crystals and elegant decorative elements. The reverse features lines from a Latvian folk song (“daina”) dedicated to wedding traditions and the beauty of a bridal wreath. <\/p>\n
