Charlemagne Peralt (1885\u20131919)<\/p>\n
fought as a military leader<\/p>\n
American occupation of Haiti since 1915.<\/p>\n
After his death at the hands of American troops in 1919<\/p>\n
he became a martyr and is still considered a symbol of resistance.<\/p>\n
The portrait of Peralta is depicted on three obverses of this<\/p>\n
complete set of Haitian gourde coins.<\/p>\n
The remaining two show the Citadel Laferriere,<\/p>\n
built in 1820, and portraits of famous<\/p>\n
Haitian statesmen Toussaint Louverture,<\/p>\n
Henri Christophe, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Alexandre Sabes P\u00e9tion.<\/p>\n
Interestingly, centime coins were minted in<\/p>\n
the alignment of the coins, and the gourdes coins in the alignment of the medals.<\/p>\n
