When the Lewis and Clark expedition crossed the Continental Divide, the nature of its mission changed radically. At every stage of their journey through the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast, Lewis and Clark depended on the friendship, supplies, and logistical support of the tribes along the way. In the winter of 1804-1805 they encamped among the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes, and in 1806 the Klatsop, and their cooperation was essential to the success of this mission. The Mandan and Hidatsa tribes on the Missouri River welcomed Lewis and Clark and their Discovery Corps to their unique villages, often sitting and talking around the fire when meeting Black Cat, the Mandan chief. Lewis expressed deep respect for the Black Cat (Posecopsahe) and walked many miles to smoke a pipe with him on the day of his departure.<\/p>\n
The obverse design retains the central figure of the “Sakagawa” design, first issued in 2000. It depicts Sakagawa carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste.<\/p>\n
The reverse depicts an Indian offering a pipe while his wife offers fish, corn, roots, and gourds.<\/p>\n
In the background is a stylized image of the face of William Clark’s compass, denoting “Northwest” – the area in which the expedition took place.<\/p>\n
