The firefly squid is perhaps one of the most fascinating sea creatures. It lives in the depths of the Sea of ​​Japan and amazes with its ability to emit blue light using photophores – tiny glowing organs located along its tentacles and body. The squid uses these tiny flashes of light for camouflage, communication, and perhaps even to lure prey into the dark.

Not exceeding 8 centimeters in length, the glowing squid is perfectly adapted to life in the depths. Its compound eyes help it navigate in near-dark conditions, and the synchronized light signals produced by thousands of individuals during spawning season make the night waters off the coast of Japan a truly magical spectacle. This phenomenon is so impressive that in spring thousands of people gather on the coast to see the squid “dance of light” with their own eyes.

Air bubbles rise between them and the tail fin disappears under the waves to the right. The reverse of the coin depicts a squid in a moment of luminescence, surrounded by shimmering bubbles in an underwater scene framed by a porthole-shaped band.
