The coin commemorates the 800th anniversary of the death of Francis of Assisi, one of the most revered saints in Christendom and the founder of the Franciscan Order. Francis renounced a life of wealth and prosperity, devoting himself to service, preaching, humility, and a life in harmony with nature.

The coin’s design evokes one of the most famous legends associated with Francis – the story of the wolf of Gubbio. The central composition depicts the saint’s hand extended toward the wolf’s open mouth, which gazes at it without aggression, symbolizing reconciliation, trust, and peace between humanity and nature. The scene is surrounded by delicate floral motifs. The coin’s reverse displays its face value.
