Complete coin set: Haitian struggle for independence

Charlemagne Peralt (1885–1919)

fought as a military leader

American occupation of Haiti since 1915.

After his death at the hands of American troops in 1919

he became a martyr and is still considered a symbol of resistance.

The portrait of Peralta is depicted on three obverses of this

complete set of Haitian gourde coins.

The remaining two show the Citadel Laferriere,

built in 1820, and portraits of famous

Haitian statesmen Toussaint Louverture,

Henri Christophe, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Alexandre Sabes Pétion.

Interestingly, centime coins were minted in

the alignment of the coins, and the gourdes coins in the alignment of the medals.
