The coin consists of 3 components: an outer ring, an inner copper-nickel alloy disc and a turquoise colored light-conducting polymer ring. Reverse: In the center there is a moose on an ice floe, icebergs, ice sheets and the tower of the research station. The obverse of the coin depicts a German eagle, year of issue, denomination, country name and 12 stars of the European Union.

Each courtyard has its own shade of turquoise polymer ring.
