The coin is dedicated to Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, two Italian judges who have dedicated their entire careers to fighting the Italian mafia since the early 1960s.
They were close companions and both spent their early years in the same area of Palermo. Although many of their childhood friends grew up in the Mafia, both men fought on the other side of the war on crime in Sicily as judges.
Giovanni Falcone, along with his wife and three bodyguards, was killed in an explosion by the Sicilian mafia.
His friend and crime-fighting ally, Paolo Borsellino, was killed by a mob-planted car bomb less than two months after Falcone’s murder.
