A fish of many talents, the yellow stingray moves in the water in a unique wavy pattern, glows green when exposed to ultraviolet light, and has a nasty poisonous stinger in its tail. The green glow of the yellow stingray is the result of its ability to reflect light using endogenous substances. The function of this glow is not clear, but the stingray may use it to communicate with other members of its species and as a form of camouflage.
No more than 75 centimeters in length, the yellow stingray is able to keep a close eye on its surroundings because its eyes are located at the highest point of its flat, almost round body. An additional safety measure is a pointed, dagger-like spike covered in venomous skin that is located far back on its tail. Used for self-defense, the sting comes into play if the stingray is in the shark’s mouth when it whips its tail lightning fast and strikes the aggressor.
All 12 magical sea creatures of the Luminous Marine Life series are depicted silhouetted on the obverse of the coin. Air bubbles rise between them and the tail fin disappears under the waves to the right. On the reverse of the coin, a wide band resembling an old-fashioned porthole frames a water scene with a yellow stingray in the center. A pair of tropical fish and a tube sponge can be seen in the background.
Along with the other coins in the Luminous Marine Life series, Yellow Stingray is designed to showcase the beauty and vitality of the underwater world.
