The collection is dedicated to the centenary of the Games of the VIII Olympiad: the Summer Olympic Games Paris 1924. Organized a century ago, this significant event created a legacy that continues to this day, including the creation of the Olympic Village and the organization of the closing ceremony with protocol elements similar to those we recognize today. The city of Paris bears witness to this heritage through its historic buildings, such as the Olympic Stadium in Colombes. Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to the Olympic legacy by recalling the values and renewing the pride of hosting the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, one hundred years later. In addition to the emblem, Monnaie de Paris honors an outstanding athlete of the Paris 1924 Games: Paavo Nurmi, whose medals will be exhibited at the Monnaie de Paris during the exhibition “Gold, Silver, Bronze. The History of the Olympic Medal” from 26 March to 22 September 2024. The great Finnish runner made his mark at the 1924 Paris Games, winning five gold medals in athletics. Nicknamed the “Flying Finn,” Nurmi dominated the distance running events, winning the 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, and the individual cross country. His outstanding results contributed to Finland’s rise on the world athletics stage and established Nurmi as one of the greatest athletes of all time. The obverse of the coin features Paavo Nurmi in action. In the background is an athletics track, reminiscent of the discipline in which he excelled, and a laurel wreath, which is associated with victory and glory. The reverse features the emblem of the 1924 Paris Games, the coat of arms of the city of Paris, and a boat, a reference to the city’s founding on the Île de la Cité. The reference to 100 years is also present, a reminder of the centenary of the Paris Summer Games, which is common to the series.
