Pole vaulting is a track and field event that is part of vaulting. After a run of about fifty meters, the athlete, using a flexible pole, overcomes a horizontal bar several meters high without dropping it. Pole vaulting can be traced back to ancient Greece, where it was used as a means of transportation to cross streams, overcome obstacles, or escape from wild animals using long, stiff pieces of wood. As pole vault competitions proliferated in Europe and the United States, Baron Pierre de Coubertin decided to include the discipline in the first modern Olympic Games, in 1896 at the Athens Games.
The reverse side of the series depicts a view of Paris, where the Seine River appears as an athletics track. The Eiffel Tower rises above the city and illuminates the competition. The PARIS2024 emblem completes this composition.
