On the occasion of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Monnaie de Paris pays homage to this renowned international competition with a collection dedicated to sport, its values, athletes and the heritage of the host country. Olympic and Paralympic Games are celebrated.
Handball was first played at the end of the 19th century in Scandinavia and Germany, where handball also gained recognition as a sport. Two versions of the sport were played until 1966, when indoor handball began to replace field handball. Handball made its Olympic debut at the 1936 Berlin Games and was played as a demonstration sport at the 1952 Helsinki Games. The indoor version first appeared on the Olympic program 20 years later at the 1972 Munich Games.
The reverse side of the series depicts a view of Paris, where the Seine River appears as an athletics track. The Eiffel Tower rises above the city and illuminates the competition. The PARIS2024 emblem completes this composition.
