“ Eglė, Queen of Serpents ” (in Lithuanian Eglė žalčių karalienė) is a Lithuanian folk tale. It is considered one of the oldest in Lithuanian and Baltic folklore. The tale tells the story of a girl who becomes the queen of snakes by marrying their ruler, as well as the fate of her family after this event.
Obverse: handicraft as a symbol of a cozy evening when fairy tales are told. The atmosphere of the coin is emphasized by the motives of the moon and stars, as well as the name of the country made of yarn at the top of the coin. The composition above shows the motive of the fairy tale “Eglė – Queen of Serpents (snake, heart, spruce). Reverse: confrontation between the serpent and Egle, the main characters of the tale. Eglė´s hair that turns into the foam of the sea waves. The body of the snake is decorated with symbolic pictograms that tell the story of this fairy tale, and includes the name of the fairy tale “Eglė – žalčių karalienė” (Egle – Queen of serpents). The composition also features tree silhouettes like Egle’s children transformed into trees.
