Sacagawea was a Shoshone Indian who assisted the Lewis and Clark Historic Expedition. From 1804 to 1806, while still a teenager, she led adventurers from the Northern Great Plains to the Pacific and back. The group was also accompanied by her husband and their son, who was born during the trip.
On the obverse of the $1 coin, Sacagawea is depicted in three-quarter profile. On her back, Sacagawea carries Jean Baptiste, her young son. Also inscribed “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the year of minting.
The reverse depicts a soaring eagle surrounded by 17 stars. The 17 stars represent each state of the Union during the 1804 Lewis and Clark Expedition. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
In 2009, the dollar moved into the Indian $1 coin program using the Sacagawea obverse in combination with a different reverse design each year.
