1 US dollar 2009 Indigenous peoples of the United States – Farming “Three Sisters”
€5.00
The 2009 Native American $1 coin is based on the theme of spreading “three sisters” agriculture, in which corn, beans, and squash growing in the same mound increased the productivity of each plant. Agriculture has always been an important subject in Native American culture. When Europeans first arrived in the “New World”, one of the biggest contributions and benefits of their relationship with the Native Americans was the exchange of agricultural information. It is widely accepted that the colonists would not have survived in the New World without the support and knowledge gained from Native American agricultural practices.
The obverse design retains the central figure of the “Sacagawea” design, first issued in 2000. It depicts Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste.
The reverse depicts an Indian woman planting seeds in a field of corn, beans and pumpkins.
