1 US dollar 2011 Indigenous peoples of the USA – Wampanoag Treaty in Plymouth Bay
€5.00
In Native American culture, the ability to make peace was historically valued as highly as leadership in war, and was often led by a single peace leader who intervened when the age of warriors had passed. Over the centuries, tribes have forged alliances with each other that stretched for hundreds of miles. One of the first treaties of mutual alliance with settlers in what would become the United States of America was made between Puritan settlers in Plymouth and the Massoyites of the Pokanoket Wampanoag in 1621. Historians believe that the alliance with the Massasoites ensured the survival of the Plymouth Colony.
The obverse design retains the central figure of the “Sakagawa” design, first issued in 2000. It depicts Sakagawa carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste.
The reverse shows the hands of Supreme Sachem Usamekin Massasoit and Governor John Carver symbolically offering a ceremonial peace pipe after initiating the first official written peace alliance between the Wampanoag tribe and European settlers.
