1 US dollar 2020 Indigenous peoples of the USA – Elizabeth Peratrovich
€5.00
The first anti-discrimination law in the United States to prohibit discrimination in access to public accommodations was passed by the Alaska Territorial Government in 1945. Elizabeth Peratrovich (Tlingit Nation), through advocacy of Alaska Natives with her husband Roy and an impassioned speech in the Alaska Senate in support of the bill, reputedly contributed to its passage. 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Elizaveta Peratrovich’s famous testimony in support of the nation’s first anti-discrimination law.
The obverse design retains the central figure of the “Sakagawa” design, first issued in 2000. It depicts Sakagawa carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste.
The reverse features a portrait of Elizabeth Peratrovich, whose defense was considered a critical factor in the passage of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945 in the Alaska Territorial Government. In the foreground is the symbol of the Crow Tlingit group of which she was a member.
