Indiana boasts a long history of innovation in automobile manufacturing and popularization of the automobile in American culture. Indiana has produced a number of auto parts companies and automobile manufacturers, including Marmon, Studebaker, Milburn Wagon Works, and Duesenberg.

Indiana also promoted automobiles in American popular culture through auto racing. The Indianapolis 500 is one of the oldest automobile races in the world. Indianapolis 500 creator Karl Fischer also conceived the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway dedicated to automobiles across the United States.
