1 US dollar 2023 Louisiana – Higgins Boat
€4.00
The Landing Craft, Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP), or Higgins boat, is credited with helping the Allies win World War II.
In 1938, the US Navy and Marine Corps began testing a boat designed by Andrew Jackson Higgins of Higgins Industries in New Orleans, Louisiana. Higgins took inspiration from boats designed to navigate the swamps of Louisiana. Higgins’ boat had a flat bottom and a ramp at the front. It was built partly from plywood to save money and steel. With the ability to maneuver in just 10 inches of water, Higgins’ boat allowed military personnel, equipment, and small vehicles to be easily unloaded onto the open beach via a landing ramp.
Higgins Industries produced over 23,000 LCVP vehicles in New Orleans during World War II.
