Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the greatest masters of the Renaissance, whose work had a huge influence on the development of European art. In 2025, it will be 550 years since his birth, and to mark this significant date, the Republic of San Marino has issued a commemorative coin with a face value of 2 euros.
Commemorative coins dedicated to outstanding personalities are minted in limited editions and are a desirable collectible. San Marino, renowned for its respect for cultural heritage, traditionally issues thematic coins reflecting important historical events and figures.
The reverse depicts a figure of a young man, a fragment from a drawing by Michelangelo, executed in his characteristic expressive manner. This is an allegory of strength and beauty, characteristic of the master’s style. Around the image are the inscriptions “MICHELANGELO”, “SAN MARINO”, as well as the years “1475” and “2025”, indicating the anniversary date. The Roman mint mark “R” and the designer’s initials are present.
