Already in the 12th-13th centuries, trade developed here, and in the 16th century, Rybnaya Sloboda supplied Volga fish to the grand ducal, then to the royal table. These were some of the best fishing grounds for sturgeon.
Here was one of the largest fish markets in the country. In the 18th century, Rybnaya Sloboda became the most important transit point on the Upper Volga, which created favorable conditions for the development of trade. The origin of the Rybinsk merchant class belongs to this period.
