Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Yugra is a subject of the Russian Federation, part of the Tyumen Oblast. The name of the district is associated with the self-name of two main groups of northern peoples – Khanty and Mansi. In the Middle Ages, the word “Yugra” was used to describe the peoples and lands beyond the Northern Urals. Approximately 2% of the population are representatives of the indigenous peoples of the North: Khanty, Mansi and Nenets, half of whom lead a traditional way of life. Yugra is the main oil and gas bearing region of Russia and one of the largest oil producing regions in the world.
