The largest land animals on Earth live in the savannas and rainforests of Africa. Distributed centuries ago almost throughout the entire African continent, now they live only in scattered and not very extensive areas of Central and West Africa. They require large areas of territory, given their nomadic nature, which leads to the fact that they are in constant search of water and food, therefore they are constantly in conflict with people and are increasingly limited to protected natural areas on the African continent. The long period of pregnancy of elephants and the birth of one calf are factors that do not contribute to their reproduction. But above all, the disappearance of their natural habitat due to agricultural and livestock activities, recreational hunting in the 19th and 20th centuries and, above all, the poaching of ivory from their tusks, has brought them to the brink of extinction.

The coins of Spain were issued in a special design with enameling on the obverse, which ensures greater realism of the image.

The obverse of the Spanish 1.5 euro coin depicts an African elephant.

The reverse (common to all coins) depicts a floral ornament and animal tracks, the denomination and the inscription ANIMALES EN PELIGRO DE EXTINCIÓN (Endangered Animals).
