2 euro 2013 France – 50 years of the Franco-German Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation
€6.00
The Élysée Treaty, also known as the Friendship Treaty, was established by Charles de Gaulle of France and Konrad Adenauer of Germany on January 22, 1963 to bring about reconciliation between the two countries. With this, Germany and France created a new basis for relations that ended centuries of rivalry between them.
The treaty provided for consultations between France and West Germany on all important issues and efforts to develop a common position. Regular high-level meetings between high-level officials were also organized. Among the direct effects of the Treaty are the creation of the Franco-German Bureau for Youth Affairs (l’Office franco-allemand pour la jeunesse/Deutsch-Franzosisches Jugendwerk), the creation of Franco-German secondary schools, and the interaction between numerous French and German cities, schools and regions.
