Dante Alighieri was a major Italian poet of the late Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called Comedìa and later called Divina by Boccaccio, is widely considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature.
The obverse of the coin shows a portrait of Dante, taken from a fresco by Botticelli, combined with a script inspired by the initial letters of the first copyists of the Divine Comedy.
