The coin is dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the opening of the Ajuda Botanical Garden, Lisbon. The garden was founded in 1768 and is the oldest botanical garden in Portugal. It occupies an area of about 35,000 square meters and is decorated in the Baroque style. The most outstanding plant is the 400-year-old Dragon Tree from Madeira, its diameter is 23 meters. Also for the blind there is a “fragrant garden” with aromatic and medicinal plants. At the beginning of the 19th century, there were about 5,000 plant species in the garden, but many of them were taken away during the occupation of territories and destroyed by natural disasters, later partially restored.

Obverse: 400 year old Dragon Tree from Madeira and the inscription “250 ANOS JARDIM BOTANICO DA AJUDA” followed by the name of the state and the year of issue of the coin “PORTUGAL 2018”.
Reverse: the usual denomination of 2€.
