After the October Revolution of 1917, Soviet power was established in Estonia, which lasted until February 18, 1918, when Estonian territory was occupied by German troops. On February 24, 1918, independence of Estonia was proclaimed.
Power passed into the hands of the “Provisional Government” under the leadership of Konstantin Päts.
Red Army troops were sent to the Baltic states to restore Soviet power. After a 13-month war with the Soviet Union, (November 28, 1918 – January 3, 1920), on February 2, 1920, the Tartu Peace Treaty was signed between the Soviet Union and Estonia. Under the agreement, the Soviet Union unconditionally recognized the independence of the Estonian Republic.
