On the occasion of the double event – the 20th anniversary of the euro and the French Presidency of the European Union – the 1 and 2 euro coins have a new design. This exceptional event is only possible every fifteen years and must be approved by the European Commission.
This reimagining of the tree of life, already coined by Joaquín Jiménez and adorning French coins since 2002, is called the Tree of Union. In a more modern form, this image combines two views: the oak evokes strength and justice, the olive tree symbolizes peace. This tree shines with the stars of the European flag as an allegory of values shared with other countries.
