The official name of the coin is “500 years from the date of the appearance of the decree on the second period of issue of coins during the reign of Charles V”.
Charles V – Holy Roman Emperor. He issued a decree on the release of new types of coins and new denominations. He was the first to use Latin letters instead of Gothic writing in accordance with the ideas of the Renaissance. The coins minted by Charles V can be considered modern because he also reformed the small denomination coins that ordinary people used for payments. He was the first to introduce small coins made entirely of copper, and even these small denomination coins bore his portrait.
The obverse of the new Belgian 2 euro coins depicts the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Charles V on the right side, to the left of him – the image of the coin introduced during the reign of the emperor.
