€12.00 includes 22% VAT
In 1948, Belgium reached a major milestone with the introduction of universal women’s suffrage. Belgium calls on people to honor the historic struggle for women’s rights. The coin not only pays tribute to the past, but can also serve as inspiration for the ongoing fight for gender equality.
Belgium was one of the last European countries to introduce women’s suffrage. The lag in women’s suffrage was mainly due to early women’s rights advocates such as Marie Popeline and Isala Van Diest, who decided to focus first on improving women’s education and legal equality in Belgium before advocating for equal suffrage. Additionally, during this time, many members of the socialist and liberal parties did not trust women to vote, fearing that women would vote too conservatively. By 2019, women held 42% of parliamentary positions.
