The Louvre Museum is one of the largest and most popular art museums in the world. The museum is located in France, in the center of Paris. In the Louvre everything was collected, this museum can be called universal. The museum’s collections cover a vast geographical and temporal expanse: from western Europe to Iran through Greece, Egypt and the Middle East; from antiquity to 1848.
The museum building is an old royal palace (Palais du Louvre). The equestrian statue of Louis XIV marks the starting point of the so-called historical axis of Paris. In 2018, the number of visitors to the Louvre exceeded 10 million, a record.
Among the museum’s most famous works are the Mona Lisa, the Venus of Milos, the Sitting Scribe, Cupid and Psyche, Nika of Samothrace and the Laws of Hammurabi.
The coin depicts the Colonnade de Perrault, the eastern facade of the building facing the church of Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois. This exterior facade is inserted into the layout of the museum. The pyramid of the Louvre stands out in the background.
The card depicts the sculpture “Cupid and Psyche”. “Cupid and Psyche” is a work by Venetian sculptor Antonio Canova, executed in marble in two versions in 1793. For his first and most famous sculpture, Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss, Canova chose the moment immediately following Psyche’s awakening from Cupid’s kiss, when the lovers reach out to embrace each other. The plot is taken from the work of the ancient Roman writer Apuleius “Metamorphoses, or the Golden Donkey”.
