The Saarland is the smallest German state by area, not counting the federal city-states. Saarbrücken is the capital and largest city. Saarland borders France to the south and west, and Luxembourg to the west. One third of Saarland is covered by forests.
The coin depicts the “Saar Loop”, a remarkable bend in the Saar River, a natural monument on the border of Germany, France and Luxembourg and one of the main attractions of the Saar.
