Born on the island of Zákynthos, Andreas Kalvos (1792–1869) is one of the most important modern Greek poets. Kalvos, which was combined with excellent neoclassical education and the noble ideals of romanticism, expressed both the revolutionary ideas of his time and his personal vision, combining archaic and popular Greek. The national side of the coin features a portrait of Andreas Kalvos. Along the left edge of the central part of the coin is the inscription “ANDREAS KALVOS 1792-1869”, the year of mintage and the palm-shaped emblem of the Mint of Greece; along the right-hand edge of the center of the coin are the words “HELLENIC REPUBLIC” (in Greek). There is also a monogram of the artist (George Stamatopoulos) on the right side of the coin. The outer ring of the coin depicts the 12 stars of the European Union flag.
