2 euro Italy 2025 – Jubilee Year
€5.00
A jubilee year in Catholicism is a year in which the possibility of receiving a full indulgence, that is, the forgiveness of all temporal punishments for sins, is allowed. Also called the “Holy Year.”
The Holy Year was first observed in 1300 by decree of Pope Boniface VIII. 1470, Pope Paul II issued a new decree, Jubilees should be celebrated every 25 years so that each new generation could participate in the Jubilee; a tradition arose requiring Jubilees to be celebrated at the beginning of each quarter century. In addition, popes have exercised their right to declare an extraordinary Jubilee Year on several occasions.
The center of the coin depicts the Holy Gates of St. Peter’s Cathedral, which will remain open throughout the Jubilee Year as a universal symbol of faith and hope.
