2 euro Latvia 2024 – Straw ornament Puzuris
€4.50
Puzuris is a traditional Latvian straw winter solstice decoration that visually and symbolically represents the world. Suspended from the ceiling, it sways at the slightest breeze. The deeper meaning of the puzuris movement includes the concept of the winter solstice as a time when the sun changes its course toward spring, revives and regains its strength to rise higher. To make the puzuris swing effortlessly, it is made of lightweight materials and suspended on a thin thread.
Traditionally, there are two main types of pusuris in Latvian culture. The first is a polyhedron, a geometric representation of the world made of straw or reeds. The second is a round turnip suspended on a string and pierced with rye straw, representing a hedgehog curled up in a ball. Christmas is the time when the sun rises in the form of a hedgehog and begins its journey to awakening. Such jewelry is believed to provide strong protection from evil and threats.
