Luca Signorelli (1450-1523) was an Italian painter of the early Renaissance.
Luca Signorelli studied in Arezzo in the workshop of Piero della Francesca. He worked in many cities of Central Italy, at the courts of Lorenzo Medici in Florence and Federigo da Montefeltro in Urbino. In 1481-1482, Signorelli took part in the paintings of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican (first as an assistant to Perugino).
Luca Signorelli is best known for his impressive frescoes in the Chapel of the Madonna di San Brizio of the Orvieto Cathedral, characterized by “religious depth and drama, combined with naturalism in the depiction of individual figures.” The frescoes of the chapel – one of the outstanding cycles on the theme of the Apocalypse – reflect the features of the complex transition from the aesthetics of the High Renaissance to the cold and secondary style of sixteenth century Mannerism. However, according to sources, Michelangelo was inspired by this work, creating his “Last Judgment” in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.
The coin depicts an angel, a detail of Luca Signorelli’s painting Il Paradiso (Paradise), kept in the chapel of San Brizio in Orvieto Doma.
