Pietro Perugino (1446-1523) – Italian Renaissance painter. Pietro Perugino was one of the first, along with young Florentine artists, to master the technique of oil painting borrowed from the Flemings. Perugino’s style is “complete calm, quiet lines, noble architecture with a wide view into the distance …
The best works of Perugino are those created before 1500. Among them, the fresco “Handing the Keys to the Apostle Peter” in the Sistine Chapel (c. 1482) and the altarpiece “Lamentation of Christ” (1495, Pitti Gallery, Florence) stand out for their harmony and clarity of composition.
The owner of two active workshops, in Florence and Perugia, Pietro Perugino was for several decades the most famous and most influential Italian artist.
