2 euros Malta 2016 – Temples of Ggantija (Monnaie de Paris mintmark)
€9.00
Ggantija is a Neolithic megalithic temple complex on the island of Gozo off the coast of Malta. It is the earliest of the megalithic temples of Malta and older than the pyramids of Egypt. Consists of two gigantic temples built during the Neolithic era (circa 3600-2500 BC). The megalithic temples of Malta, which include Ggantija, are classified as World Heritage Sites. Judging by the numerous figurines discovered in the vicinity of the complex, the temples belonged to the cult of fertility. According to local folklore, the temples were built by a race of giants who used them as a place of worship.
The coin is notable for the fact that it has the marks of the Paris mint on each side of the year of issue: on the left is a cornucopia, on the right is the pentagon of the engraver Yves Sampo.
