The Carnation Revolution was a bloodless left-wing military coup on April 25, 1974 in Lisbon, Portugal, carried out by the underground army organization “Captains’ Movement”. It led to the overthrow of the New State regime and the establishment of a military transitional rule. In 1976, after an active struggle over the choice of the further development of Portugal, the military held elections and transferred power to political parties, establishing a liberal democratic regime limited by the provisions of the constitution on the construction of socialism in the country.
The Carnation Revolution got its name because almost no shots were fired, and because restaurant worker Celeste Cayeiro offered carnations to the soldiers as the population took to the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship, and other demonstrators followed suit and They put carnations in the muzzles of guns and on soldiers’ uniforms.
The center of the coin features a carnation, symbolizing the revolution, surrounded by dynamic rings. The design is a symbol that people’s actions and beliefs can evolve while remaining rooted in the principles of revolution. Surrounding the image are the words “This is the dawn I’ve been waiting for,” taken from the poem “O Nome das Coisas” by poet Sofia de Mello Breiner Andresen.
